My favorite from the comments:

"A riot is but tragic comedy, non? What can one man do against such absurdities? Existence is a farce set in motion by a cruel God who knows not and cares not. I pull heavily on a Galloise and exhale slowly. A man should not fight the ineffable, but yet he must for the sake of dignity. I shrug. My companions shrug. We order a round of absinthe from the waiter. What, after all, is a burning neighborhood in the grand scheme of the universe? My companions shrug again. I think this afternoon I will see my mistress. Later, I will dine with my wife.

Hudson Oyster

I thought this was a beautiful passage, and I will just type it in:

"If we had had the ability to see deep into water, it would have all been different. New Yorkers dumped trash and sewage into the water because there it was out of sight. Suppose they could have seen it landing on the oyster beds. In the spring, the migratory fish return. Thousands of bumpy alligator-headed, primeval two-hundred pound sturgeon; elegant silver-streaked striped bass, their stripes seemingly made for racing; and thick schools of radiant shad tear into the strong currents, while little baitfish, purposeless hangers-on caught up in all the exhilaration of the moment, struggle furiously along as best they can. They are all bumping shoulders, swatting tails, thousands and thousands of determined fish, putting their heads nose first into the same current, charging through the Narrows over to the oyster beds of Liberty and Ellis islands, while their sedentary partners, the oysters, wave their shells open and closed beneath them, pumping clean the water, the seething crowds above turning and racing toward Manhattan and the Hudson River, past the teeming and humming city, street by street to the picturesque upstate waters of their birth. Certainly anyone who could have seen that would have understood that the great and unnatural city was built at the site of a natural wonder, and that the lowly oysters working at the bottom were a treasure more precious than pearls."

Dinosaurs Sucked

We've all seen the headlines, and frankly I can't understand near translucent bones. But JB commented with this trenchant link.

Gooey Pumpkin Cake

I may try this...It looks so easy. I have a convection oven and it sometimes (as if I have done any cooking in the last forever) takes a batch to adjust the timing but this Gullyborg's endorsement of a Paula Dean variation is making me hungry-----

PUMPKIN GOOEY BUTTER CAKE

Ingredients:

1 package yellow cake mix (standard 18 oz box, any brand is fine)
2 sticks of butter (1/2 cup each)
1 package softened cream cheese (8 oz)
4 eggs
1 large can pumpkin (28 oz)
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
2 cups powdered sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg

Hardware:

Microwave
Microwave-safe bowl
Conventional oven
Greased 13" x 9" baking pan
Stand mixer

Step One -- Crust:

In the microwave-safe bowl, melt one stick of butter. Using the stand mixer, combine the melted butter with one egg and the package of yellow cake mix to form a thick dough. Press the dough firmly and evenly into the bottom of the baking pan.

Step Two -- Batter:

In the stand mixer, combine all remaining ingredients. Pour batter into the baking pan over the crust layer and spread evenly.

Step Three -- Bake:

Bake in a conventional oven at 350 F for 40-50 minutes. The center should remain somewhat gooey as it comes out of the oven.

Step Four -- Cool, Cut and Serve:

For best results, prepare the day it is to be served; serve while still slightly warm from baking. Add a dollop of whipped cream and garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon.

For variations including chocolate, peanut butter, and pineapple, please visit Paula Deen's recipe page.

Now BAKE! It's the Holidays already!

Monorail News

"The wine-tasting tour scheduled at several monorail stops along the Hartford-East Hartford monorail line has been postponed at the request of the state liquor commission, which has objected to the lack of a monorail."

That suggests congestion for the Holiday traffic next week.

Birthday Coffee

I have been enjoying tea for quite a while but I still like coffee. I consumed enormous amounts and at some point caffeine was having noticeable effects, hours later, and it is something I consider before purchasing.

On my birthday I stuck my nose into Redding Roasters and they were very friendly. They roast right there and you can get as much information as you need to really pick out a blend to your satisfaction. I chose what turned out to be fantastic beans from Papua New Guinea. With some hot milk (much) and boiling water (I also add a little honey) in the Missoula mug it is delicious. Chocolaty and I believe the milk is the mitigating factor on the caffeine. Does that fat bear hug the 1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6(3H,7H)-dione and leave me with fewer symptoms? I have not looked it up but I'm sure the info is out there.

Survival Manual Secret?

Via Stephen Aftergood's Secrecy newsletter a 2002 Army survival manual:

'ARMY FIELD MANUAL ON SURVIVAL"All of us were born kicking and fighting to live, but we have becomeused to the soft life.... What happens when we are faced with asurvival situation with its stresses, inconveniences, and discomforts?" That question is posed in a 2002 U.S. Army Field Manual on survivalstrategies and techniques in emergency situations.Almost all of the contents will be familiar to students of wildernessmedicine and first aid. (Except maybe "Prepare yourself to survive in anuclear environment.") Nevertheless, U.S. Army web sites do not permit public access to the document, which says that distribution is limitedto government agencies and contractors. A copy was obtained by SecrecyNews.See "Survival," U.S. Army Field Manual FM 3-05.70, May 2002 (676 pagesin an extremely large 45 MB PDF file): http://www.fas.org/irp/doddir/army/fm3-05-70.pdf
