Maggie's Farm and Every New Year

Maggie's Farm, New England's own, (CT's own?) provides the best quote to start the next hunk of civilization's calendar, as far as I can see:

"Despite the prevalence of amoral, pop-psychological language, decent people still live, or struggle to live, according to the time-honored virtues. If they do not - keep your distance and beware, because they are "coming from a different place" and are playing by a different rule-book."

Happy New Year!!

That's not my photo dangit!

Beautiful though.

A year gone, a spring in the offing, and a winter to savor, for us all.

Thank God.

Emoticon

I think I posted once on the oldest, possibly, emoticon.

In the previous post I almost used ;}

What the hell would that be?

A steampunk monocled smile with a van dyke?

Dave Barry

His full "Year in review" is a must read, in it's entirety.

The most insightful rundown of this most foul year, without doubt
.

My Television

Is very old.

A large and dare I say elegant for it's time CRT. (I heard they are more green, so I haven't switched. Yeah. Right;)

It came with two remotes.

In China they have recently opened a shopping center with two parking lots.

One has large spaces and is designed, well, for women.

That chivalrous yellow horde!

The shopping centre hopes to appeal to
China's women drivers

The fairer sex ought to be grateful.

Especially after noting this study which I came across this week. How very helpful:

'Female drivers take an average of 20 seconds longer to park their cars but are still less likely to end up in the middle of the bay, the research suggests.

As part of the test 65 people were asked to park an Audi A6 family saloon in a standard-sized parking space.

Their manoeuvres – including head-on, reverse and parallel parking – were timed and rated for accuracy, which was judged by how far they kept the vehicle from the edges of the bay.

While the researchers expected the women volunteers to be slower, they were surprised to find that the cautious approach did not lead to a tidier final result.

Dr Claudia Wolf from Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany, who led the study, said that the research confirmed previous findings that men have better co-ordination and spatial awareness than women, and take more risks behind the wheel.

"These prejudices exist and as a scientist I decided the find out if they are true or based on myth," she told the Mail on Sunday.

"I don't think that feminism or the cause of women is in any way set back by these findings. It only proves what previous studies about the spatial differences between men and women have shown.

"Besides, it is not as if there was a massive failing by women. It is just about parking – not the triumph of men over women."'

That second remote which came with my television years ago? It has 8 buttons only.

I was told it was for women. I kid you not.

How could I purchase a t.v. that women could not operate?

That would be sexist, selfish and inconsiderate.

The sale was completed post haste, and probably helpful for the elderly as well.

Lauren Bacall

I've always been a sucker for a good Bogart film.

Lauren Bacall is in a kind of retrospective of him right now on TMC.

I've learned that Lauren Bacall's cousin is...Shimon Perez?

There are quite a few links on the matter, I found this one informative and amusing.

Achmed the Dead Terrorist

Sings "Jingle Bombs"

And from last week, they lose it a little on the scoliosis and polio/poliosis:

I almost linked to this article earlier in the week regarding polio, via the anchoress. I wouldn't pick the moment after the videos to go and read that one though...

Palliative Sedation

Second Hand Smoke, which is part of Firstthings.com which also contains the indispensable Gatewaypundit and The Anchoress, links to this NYTimes article which touches on the notions of comfort and euthanasia:

"Among those choices is terminal sedation, a treatment that is already widely used, even as it vexes families and a profession whose paramount rule is to do no harm.

Doctors who perform it say it is based on carefully thought-out ethical principles in which the goal is never to end someone’s life, but only to make the patient more comfortable.

But the possibility that the process might speed death has some experts contending that the practice is, in the words of one much-debated paper, a form of “slow euthanasia,” and that doctors who say otherwise are fooling themselves and their patients."

I have had discussions with a friend who happens to be a nurse and largely a libertarian in which that individual seems to realize that these complicated decisions are made all of the time but he would as well like to see euthanasia legalized. He cites Oregon as a success.

I have insisted to this individual that I don't want the government involved. Once they cross that threshold they can only ever be a menace.

As here, in Oregon.

Citizen Action

Randy Barnett has a very nice post entitled "The Unorganized Militia is Once Again Needed" over at Volokh.

He links to an article which had up way back on Sept. 18, 2001...

Just go and read it all. Chock full of second amendment and the notion of a robust society acting, as Glenn Reynolds would say "A pack, not a herd."

The Night the Reindeer Died

JungleTrader

Wow. I just checked in on Jungletrader and he is posting again. That's a great thing, he is one of my favorites.

I thought he had taken his leave of the site.

County

Jay turned me on to this company quite a while ago.

I just wish I had thought of it several weeks ago, it is full of great gift ideas for Christmas.

Too late now darnit.

Shower In a Towel

It would be a very nice and patriotic gesture to send some cleaning towels to our troops so far afield. Not quite a hot shower, but I'll bet they would appreciate each and every one more than we can know:

Sister's Birthday

Today is the birthday of sister.

Happy Birthday Sister!!

Brother's birthday was the 18th.

Happy Birthday Brother!!

Holy cats!

She shares a birthday with Maurice Gibb.

I can't joke, I was born on Michael Jackson's birthday.

And not the good one.

The F-105 had an auspicious December 22nd back in the sixties, although I think the "Wild Weasel" appellation has a different aspect not mentioned in this roundup of 12/22 history.

December
18th as well.

Wow. On December 18, 1862 the "Hospital for Ruptured and Crippled" was opened in New York City. That brutal Civil War no doubt hastened the nation's first orthopedic hospital.

Frugal Cuisine

It is becoming increasingly apparent to me that I must start taking better care of myself.

Entrusted with the care of a dog or even a cat I would never, ever, consider negltecting them in the fashion with which I treat myself.

The word abuse would be an understatement.

Anyway, I noticed this site:

I think it may have some tips and notions which I can employ. Many, perhaps.

I saw it on Althouse.

R.I.P Rocksy and Shivers

Well it has been a difficult year.

A year of unending passing it seems.

We now see the departure of Rocksy or Shivers.

I had some nice photos on the previous blog, I am searching for them now, and, yet...

A moment, please:

Sanford and Son

was based on the BBC series "Steptoe and Son"?

Wow is there a whole lot to learn in this world.

The first 3d Santa?

In the U.S.?

Via Coasttocoast a link to an article regarding the representation of Santa. Also a link to the historic Ohio toy factory museum. Who knew that one man revolutionized the lives of children by making toys accessible? Make enough marbles and you change the world.

I will put aside all questions. It is Santa, after all...

"Insulation is Sexy"

It's true, good Lord, how true!

"I disagree, insulation is sexy stuff, here's what's sexy about it..."

President Obama finally gets a matter completely and truthfully correct!

Obama wrapped up: "I'm excited about it, and I hope you are, too. See, I told you, insulation's sexy." (11:27 a.m.)

That honesty is here in the last several seconds, the first bit of clarity is at about 1:25:

Visiting Traffic

I have really fallen off on the posting.

That being said I believe the photo of the two headed turtle and the one of Rosie Odonnell, (I don't care to look up her name's spelling) continue to drive traffic.

That and the NatGeo large trout photos twice a year.

Today should see the one hundred thousandth page view.

Jay, I do have your prizes now. It took a while, something of a struggle has occurred in the last months on account of my being a jackass. I apologize for the delay.

If I recognize the 100k visitor I guarantee a prize.

If I don't I will donate some ammo to homeless children, God bless them!:)

(I will update this post to give the individual, regardless of where they are located, a prize. I will leave a hint, and if they can confirm their location and time the grand and elaborate winnings will be assured! Homemade peanut butter cup? Rubies? Signed and numbered photo? Nerf gun?
The day is electric!)

Update: Well I just checked the sitemeter and sadly "Googlebot" is ineligible for the prize. I don't trust a bot with a nerf gun, quite frankly.

So there we have it...carry on.

Jackie Martling Grabbed My Balls

So this one time, a while ago, Marty H. got some tickets to see Jackie Martling in Trumble. Then Don B. (of Honey Bong fame) spoke with his friend about bumping our tickets closer to the stage.

I wore a nice warm plaid shirt as we took our seats which were RIGHT there next to the stage.

Jackie opened with a couple of insults including one asking me if I was a thermos. Very cool.

After the show I gave Adam my cell phone to take a photo of us. As I had my arm around Jackie I said to him "I'm going to grab your tit for the photo" under my breath. He seemed deadly serious as he nodded. As Adam was lining up the shot I grabbed Jackie's tit, but he already had his revenge in motion.

He proceeded to grab my balls and all associated FIERCELY and with a powerfull middle finger in discovery mode like some sort of psycho doctor. ( "I was doing fine until I went to the proctologist on Friday. I think he was tripping on acid. He looked up my ass with a kaleidoscope… That’s my newest joke. I love it. ")

That is the last time I try to joke with Jackie Martling.

Ugh ;)

The second snap above is of Adam and the Jokeman.

The first is of myself with firm grip of the funnyfella's teet. You can see him attempting to mask a devious grin with an intense poker face.

He knows what he is about to do.

He tried to time it to get it in the shot, but that whole cell camera lag thing is near impossible to anticipate. Especially however many years ago when this occurred. It doubled me over instantly with shock and laughter.

God bless Jackie!

Update: Jimmy as always has a good point. I think I used the term "boob" when I engaged in the sotto voce prevarication with the Jokeman.

Thank you for jogging my memory Jimmy.

Insert digital jogging joke here:)

Or...well, look for yourself...

It would indeed seem fishy to me.
