Solstice webcast. I meant to blog this earlier in the week and now can't recall where I saw it mentioned, one of the usual spots. Newgrange in Ireland, the famed ancient structure which is oriented around the light of the Solstice, is being webcast by Heritage Ireland.


"Every year, at the time of the winter solstice, the sun shines directly along this passage into the chamber for about 17 minutes as it rises. The alignment with the sun is too precise to have occurred by chance.The sun however, does not enter the passage at Newgrange through the main entrance, but rather through a specially contrived opening, known as a roofbox, which lies directly above the entrance. Although solar alignments are not uncommon among passage graves, Newgrange is essentially the only one said to contain the additional roofbox feature. The solar alignment at Newgrange is also still very precise compared to similar phenomena at other passage graves such as Dowth or Maes Howe in the Orkney islands off the coast of Scotland."

tonight is the peak for the meteor shower, the Geminid. It has not been cancelled due to reluctance to cross picket lines, so don't panic. They will be walking next week to assess damage in orbit from micrometeoroids, but I don't believe Geminid is the culprit.

When I was very young myself and a friend searched in the woods for hours to find meteorites that I did not know were the first recorded to strike the U.S. We had only read of an old strike and had rumors upon rumors for encouragement. Those woods are all developed now...wouldn't have known one if I had bonked my beak into it, but they are fond memories.

They are interring a time capsule in honor of the anniversary.

I half wonder if Richard Russo took the name for this book's town, Thomaston, from Thomaston Ct., home of the Rail Road Museum of New England. Me and Gator checked it out. The town was renamed from "Plymouth" in honor of Seth Thomas, who built a factory there.
