I've witnessed first hand how much food is wasted on a daily basis. Fear of litigation plays a sizable role in this waste. Also to blame, are the nanny-staters that justify such purging of still edible products with the argument "if we save one life its worth it".It ends up being a case of liberal v. liberal. One camp wants to save humanity by feeding, the other wishes to spare the masses from "risky "foods. It's reminiscent of the environmentalists that square off over wind power. One group pro to save energy, another against because of the danger presented to birds. In either case I don't expect to see much compromise as long as trial lawyers can grow fat battling such things in our courts.
